Tradeshow Information for Volunteers
The PNBA Fall Tradeshow is the premier book industry event in the Pacific Northwest. Held annually in late September or early October, the show features three days of events aimed at the owners of and buyers for independent bookstores, publishers, authors, librarians, and other people in the bookselling industry. The first day of the show is filled with seminars for booksellers publishers, and librarians, and features readings and autographing sessions with numerous authors. Hundreds of exhibitors show their wares on the second day, and the third day is reserved for more exhibits and a variety of events featuring authors. The show includes several meals at which authors talk about their works, a “celebration of authors,” opportunities to get a book or two autographed by a favorite author, and chances to meet and talk with people from all aspects of the bookselling industry. How the show works: As a non-profit organization, the PNBA runs this show almost completely on volunteer energy. We typically need about 25 people to fill about 80 shifts over the course of the three-day show. That is where you come in. What you get: The trade show is not open to the public. Entrance to the show requires membership in the PNBA or an entrance fee (with proof of employment in the industry). If you volunteer for the show the fee is waived and you receive a name badge that identifies you as a member of the staff, as well as entrance to all non-ticketed events for the show. What we need from you: In exchange for the above, we ask volunteers to work at least three shifts, totaling 15-16 hours, during the show. Jobs include working at the registration desk, helping authors during autographing sessions, checking badges at the door, sorting and moving books, and being generally available to do what is needed. Most folks work all three days. Some work only two, but everyone must be available to work on the second day. Shifts last between four and eight hours, depending on the job and the day. In addition, each volunteer must attend one mandatory orientation session, generally held on the first day. We can be flexible with schedules to accommodate your needs, and the schedule will be set well in advance so you will know exactly when we need you and when you can be off enjoying the show.
