Finding Your Third Place
with Richard Kyte
Is your store the hangout spot in your neighborhood? The one where bookworms bump into each other to talk about the latest and greatest book they’ve read, where friendships are made over a mutual love for the way books smell? If so, you just might be a Third Place for your community. Our first place is our home, our second place is work, but YOUR bookstore could be someone’s Third Place.
It’s no secret that our world is full of isolation, hours in digital landscapes, and loneliness, but, what if bookstores like yours can be part of the solution? In his book, Finding Your Third Place, noted ethicist Richard Kyte weaves great stories, thoroughly researched social science, and philosophy to discover how independent bookstores can become the vibrant hubs our communities crave. At PNBA he’ll give you all the tips and tricks to turn your bookstore into a Third Place and make it a space where community and friendships flourish.
Richard Kyte is Director of the D. B. Reinhart Institute for Ethics in Leadership and Endowed Professor of Ethics at Viterbo University in La Crosse, Wisconsin where he teaches a variety of courses dealing with ethical issues in business, health care, law, politics, and the environment. He then went on to graduate school, obtaining a Ph.D. in philosophy from The Johns Hopkins University in 1994.
