11:00 am
Managing the Monsters: An Interactive Exchange of Methods for Selling Brilliant Artists Who Do Bad Things

This conversation is inspired by Claire Dederer’s bestselling Monsters: A Fan’s Dilemma and authors whose books have been customer favorites but whose behavior has traversed a range of the objectionable, in the far and recent past.

Facilitated by Lane Jacobson (Paulina Springs Books, Sisters, OR), with contributions from Rebecca Crosswhite (Rediscoverd Books, Boise, ID), Kate Larson (Ballast Book Co., Bremerton, WA), and Bonnie Ingersoll (Spoke & Word Books, Milwaukie, OR). Participation is encouraged from any audience member with a policy, case study, or philoshophy to share from their store.

Merchandising Demo with Alyson Brown

Store display and Instagram marketers take note! Master the art of merchandising cocktail books, glassware, and all the essentials needed to create eye-catching displays! Alyson Brown is a beverage photographer--Fiday Night Cocktails, anyone?—and drink stylist whose passion for cocktails led her to author her first book, The Flower-Infused Cocktail: Flowers with a Twist. When she’s not behind the camera, she can be found enjoying beautiful Bend, Oregon, with her husband and two sons.

2:20 pm
Those Tricky Categories

The PNBA Education Committee will lead breakout groups to discuss niche genres and sections within the bookstore. Best practices for display, stock, buying (especially backlist!), and growing your store’s readership. Topics discussed may include manga, romance, sci-fi, fantasy, literary fiction, social science, nonfiction, and sidelines.

3:15 pm
An Unpublished Author Walks into Your Store, with publisher and author Laura Stanfill

Imagine a Door:  A Writer's Guide to Unlocking Your Story, Choosing a Publishing Path, and Honoring the Creative Journey. Agents, self-publishing, small presses—sure, but wayyyyyy before all that, it's about showing up for local authors, attending bookstore events, building confidence in your work, and all the pre-publishing possibilities!
