A sales rep/former bookseller, a children’s book buyer/ children’s book editor, and members of the audience weigh in on this panel about what to look for in a book ("the ingredients"), how to read excerpts aloud engagingly ("the cooking techniques"), and how to showcase these delights for customers ("the plating") to cook up connection, appreciation, literacy, and sales using picture books.

Education Keynote Lunch
This is a Fire Drill: Preparing for and Avoiding Crises
Presented by the American Booksellers Association
Presented by the American Booksellers Association
Join ABA Director of Education (and former PNBA bookseller!) Kim Hooyboer in a review of some of the top crises stores have experienced in the last year. From cybersecurity threats to a car driving into the store, we will provide resources and tips to prepare for and, when possible, avoid these crises at your store. Topics will include: fire, flood, and natural disasters; protesters, break-ins, and ransomware, credit card fraud, and more. Throughout the session, we’ll explore ways to respond to these crises, prioritize employee communication, and mitigate the risk of these events occurring at your store. Think of this session as insurance and take this time to invest in protecting your business.
Kim Hooyboer is the Director of Education at the American Booksellers Association. After nearly two decades working in bookstores around the country (including Third Place Books and Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle, Powell's Books in Portland, and WORD Bookstore in Jersey City), Hooyboer now works with the ABA to develop educational programming and resources to help bookstores thrive in an ever-evolving industry.
