2017 Show Plans
December Footnotes announced the 2017 Tradeshow at the Red Lion Hotel on the River, Jantzen Beach, in Portland, as starting October 7. Although the Board of Directors will meet on Saturday, the 7th, the three-day show will begin on the 8th.

Setting Sail
When Roger and Nancy Page sold Island Books this past year after 30 years at the helm, they promised to stay on on as staff members "until the shop was balanced on both wheels."

That bittersweet time has come, and they said goodbye in the store's January newsletter.

Big Steps at Sasquatch
Shelf Awareness reports that Sasquatch publisher Gary Luke has been named chairman and chief executive officer. Director of Sales and Marketing--and a familiar face from the tradeshow booth--Sarah Hanson has been named president and chief operating officer and joins the company's board.

High Praise in The Huff

"We stood there holding our treasures, taking this store in one more time before we went about our day."

Hear the Sermon in Portland

Representatives of the American Booksellers Association will lead a presentation titled "Indie Bookstores and the New Localism," in Portland, Friday, March 4.

The free 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. session will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, at 1624 NE Hancock, in Portland, just a few strides up the street from Broadway Books and will include a lunch provided by ABA.

After the forum, the BookBroads invite attendees to drop in for a store walk-through before retiring next door to the Broadway Grill and Brewery for a PNBA-hosted happy hour with 2016 PNBA Award-winning author of Undermajordomo Minor, Patrick deWitt, and other special guests.

Please RSVP to your ABA Member Relations rep, Nathan Halter, by Wednesday, Feb. 24.

Open Books Open for Bidding
After more than 20 years running Seattle's poetry-only bookstore (almost 30 years at the bookstore till, in general), John Marshall and Christine Deavel are ready to hand over the keys to the shop. Read Marshall's announcement letter at The Seattle Review of Books.

Snow Goose on the Market
From Kristine Kaufmann and Tom Bird, Snow Goose Books & Frames, Stanwood, WA, in the store's "Honk" newsletter:

"As the old saying goes, time passes quickly when you're having fun, and our time at the Goose has been a pleasure and a privilege. But the passing of the years has meant one other thing--namely, we got, well, old. So after much rumination, we've decided to hang up our bookselling shoes, and are now actively looking for someone--maybe even you--to become the proud new owner of Snow Goose Books & Frames."

Interested? Contact Mark Kaufman at Paz & Associates, 904-277-2664.

Mostly Books Totally Done
During the 2016 membership drive PNBA was informed that Gig Harbor, Washington's Mostly Books is closing its doors. Owner Jo Graffe attributed the sad decision to a variety of factors, "main one being revenues down and expenses up."
Wide World Feeling the Love, Hanging On
Seattle's Wide World Books & Maps announced its closure last month and even started selling everything that wasn't nailed down--but wait!
After an outpouring of support from hundreds of customers and travel professionals, the store decided to launch a crowd funding effort to raise $50,000 to "pay off some back bills and expand our inventory."

As of this week, the campaign has raised more than $20,000 with another $20,000 in travel package donations offered by sponsor Rick Steve's Europe. Owner Julie Hunt has good reason to share this sentiment with her customers: "I'm feeling quite optimistic that this campaign will be successful and that we'll be able to keep the store open!"

Partners Pulls the Plug
PNBA Loses Major Ally

A couple of weeks ago I received an early afternoon phone call from a one of the staff at Shelf Awareness. It wasn't someone in editorial or advertising, so I might have known something was up.

But I've received a lot of notes and calls these past few weeks; well-wishes, requests, check-ins from all corners of our industry. I happily greeted my caller. Then, the bomb.

"...hoping to get your reaction on the Partners announcement."

Awww, man. The feeling wasn't unlike that I experienced a day earlier with the news of Jim Harrison's death. Sure, the possibility might have been lingering in the deep crease between the pages for some time. Maybe there were even immediate signs.

But then, no way. He's a fixture of our landscape. He's always there. Book after book he just is.

In Northwest indie bookselling, Partners-West just is.

Was.

They sometimes kept a few copies of hot stock stashed, off the inventory, for their best customers in a pinch. It wasn't hinky, just a benefit of doing long-term, mutually-beneficial business.

They gave our local self-published authors a distribution home to support their solo efforts. Heading to the next town after that last book is signed is a whole lot easier when you don't have to square up with the bookstore and pack up your extras to load back into the trunk.

I've heard tales of hand-deliveries from the office staff.

Their booth was an oasis amongst the madness of BEA.

They were old school. They were thoughtful. They were our friends.

Gloria, Trent, Russ, Luis, Vicki, Sam and the rest of the crew. We are grateful that you live on as independent entities and hope we see you down the road--whether it's in this crazy business or elsewhere.

On behalf of all the members of PNBA, our very best.

Harrison to Come Off the Road
Karel/Dutton Rep Calls it Quits After 27 Years

Dear Friends,

I'm writing to announce that I'll be retiring in April after working in the book business for nearly four decades, beginning with a part time job doing college textbook returns--which, amazingly, didn't scare me off for good!

It has been my great good fortune to spend the last 27 years as a book rep here in the Northwest. I'd been thinking about this for a while, but as I was visiting a store earlier this season, the buyer introduced me to a newly hired bookseller. I mentioned that I'd been calling on the store since 1989--he told me that was the year he was born.

That's when I knew it was time!

In many ways this has been a dream job, because of the books, certainly (well, perhaps not all of them...), but mainly because of the people--smart, hard-working, and most importantly, honorable people. It's been a privilege to be your colleague. Many thanks to you all.

--Bob Harrison

As of May 1, the NW territory will be covered by, as Harrison put it, "two excellent and experienced reps."

Amazon to Re-join PNBA
But Only with a Severe Price Break

If you missed the April 1 edition of Shelf Awareness Pro, you started the month out wrong.

Included alongside such articles as "Coloring Books to Fill in 80% of Book Trade Sales," "Targeting Toddlers: NRA Expands Children's Book Program" and "Pop-Up Bookshop at NYC's Museum of Sex" was a bit built around an actual archival copy of Jeff Bezos' 1995 PNBA membership application, which PNBA keeps in the vault.

Really, who can argue with Amazon's point that its single store shouldn't have to pay as much as area "behemoths" like University Bookstore and Third Place Books.

Big bullies.

Turntable Project Makes it as Easy as it is Cool

After discussions with many booksellers at Winter Institute, the brain trust (it's Carl Lennertz) behind The Turntable Project has removed returnability restrictions from its vinyl terms.

"I just decided I had to remove this one big obstacle," Lennertz said. "If I'm asking stores to make an investment, I have to as well."

Not only does the project give bookstores the opportunity to stock a seriously hip sideline package, it also provides the tools for bookstores to put their stamp on turntables donated to local schools.

Pendleton Wrap-Up
Terry Dallas is closing Pendleton, Oregon's Armchair Books at month's end. Dallas acknowledges that the store "has been a huge part of the life of my family and me for the past 26 years," but cites continuing declining sales and the decision finally coming down to basic quality of life.

"I'm looking forward to finally being able to do some gardening, quilting, and hunting for mushrooms and wildflowers with my husband. I will certainly still be part of the book world in the Pacific Northwest, but now I'll just be on the other side of the counter!"

Armchair has some items to liquidate as they move out. If interested, see the listing on the NWBL Classifieds page.

Evaluating Indie Bookstore Day
Second Go Round Sees Big Boosts

"Jan's Paperbacks in Aloha, OR has surpassed our (average) daily sales at 1pm."

That's just one of the many national blockbuster reports texted in to IBD headquarters during the April 30 celebration.

430 stores officially signed on to participate this year, up from 365 in 2015. Here are a few points pulled from the collective figures of the 275 post-event reporters:

* 94% reported a sales increase from an average April Saturday.
* Average store increase was 200% (70% in 2015).
* 98% of stores would participate again.

IBD also enjoyed major media attention this year, with coverage from Los Angeles Times, Huffington Post, Boston Globe, USA Today, and San Francisco Chronicle, as well as registering as a Twitter Trender on 4/29 and 4/30!

Independent Bookstore Day plans to step up store communication to further increase participation in 2017, so be on your toes and be ready to give your customers reason to celebrate indies--to celebrate YOU--next year.

Never online. Never at the chain stores. Never miss it out!

As Booksellers prepare to convene in Orlando, the American Booksellers Association released the following statement:

"The American Booksellers Association sends its deepest sympathy to the families of the Orlando nightclub victims and wishes those injured in Sunday's tragic events a full recovery.

"It is our belief that intolerance and violence have no place in America. During these trying days for the entire country, as always, bookstores stand ready to serve as community resources for information as well as gathering places where people can gain strength from being together and sharing their thoughts and emotions.

"For our ABC Children's Institute, opening in Orlando on June 21, ABA is working on ways for attendees to offer assistance to the community and to victims' families. We will also make time during the program to pay our respects to the victims."

Participation details can be found in the article from the July 7 edition of Shelf Awareness.

Recent Site Highlights

*  Peter Geye's publishers have recognized with his first three novels that the Minnesota author writes with a style and tone generally embraced by NW booksellers and readers and have made their cases for making him a NW staple.

Emily Adams, of Third Place Books, Seattle, has gotten the message and agrees. After this interview, she also now knows he'd love to be offered a plate of mussels.

*  Seattle's Phinney Books celebrated its second anniversary by compiling a list of its Top 100 bestselling books since opening the doors in June of 2014. Have a look at the no-brainers and surprises alike and compare them to what's been moving at your store.

*  Wrap 'em up. NWBL editor and Queen Anne Book Co. children's buyer Tegan Tigani shared a few baby shower gift ideas beyond those books about the moon and a caterpillar. Other bookseller commenters chimed in with some additional recommendations, creating quite a list you may want to jot down.

Bonus Opps for Attendees and Exhibitors

The Bookseller Training Group of Paz & Associates will deliver a special bookseller workshop at the Murano titled  Planning Your Bookstore's Next Chapter: What Buyers Look For and Sellers Need to Know, set for Thursday, Sept. 29, the day prior to the start of the show.

If you have even an inkling of store transition in your thoughts, do not miss out on this rare opportunity to learn the ins and outs from the pros.

Patterson and Patchett Join Binc
Heavy Hitters Bring Passion and Clout

No longer side-by-side just on your bookshelf, James Patterson and Ann Patchett are standing together as the Book Industry Charitable Foundation's first ambassadors.

Since 1996, Binc has awarded more than $6 million in tax-free, emergency financial assistance and scholarships to booksellers across the country.

With Patchett and Patterson as its co-ambassadors, Binc will increase awareness of its mission to directly support booksellers with confidential emergency financial assistance.

*  James Crossley is the sole judge in this vacation Booklympics competition, but his credentials are undeniable and his French is apparently pretty good. The ring in his latest Cup of News is, undeniably, red wine.

*  Concentrating his summer reading focus on offbeat escapism, Mark Teppo delivers dragons and GMO sheep. But pay particular attention to the one about the man who poses as a famously reclusive author at a writer's conference (be aware; be very aware) in Teppo's latest offering of Bookseller Confessions.

Minimum Wage
Keeping It On the Radar

Minimum wage laws and trends have been particularly hot topics for owners and managers of indie bookstores for the past couple of years, and industry watchdogs are paying attention.

The American Booksellers Association's recent "Minimum Wage Roundup" featured data and analysis relevant to Seattle businesses, while Shelf Awareness wrapped up a four-part series (the first three focusing on New York, California and Washington DC) in Washington state, with input from University Book Store and Elliott Bay Book Co.

2016 Show Program
See You at the Show
Seriously, We'll Talk in Tacoma

If for some reason you are still debating the merits of a three-day bookseller holiday (yes, it's a working holiday, but, come on, we're talking customer-free here), there's still time to snap to your senses and let us know to expect you in Tacoma (though you may need to bring a sleeping bag and plan to pick up breakfast and bar tabs for your friend who does have a hotel room).

This show is one hot indie ticket, and with good reason. We are offering access to more than 100 authors, an entire day of educational opportunities and rep pitches, an exhibitor spread that has forced us to reconfigure the floor layout thrice to accommodate almost everyone who wanted space, two events with free dessert and two with free drinks!

Check out the show page to see for yourself.

It's on in Tacoma.

2016 Rural Library Project
Idaho Recipient to Pack Out the Bounty

The Stanley Community Library, Stanley, ID, will take home the 30-some-odd expected cases of publisher donations to the Michael Pritiken Rural Library Project at the end of the tradeshow this year.

The library was nominated by Iconoclast Books, of Ketchum. Owner Sarah Hedrick shared this in her nominating statement:

"Over the years (and with downsizing my store once) we have donated hundreds of books to this gem, which is located about an hour and a half north of Ketchum. They are so hungry for books that they even accept my ARCs.

"There is a great story about how the library, once housed in a little house, was finally able to expand into a more proper spot, albeit still small by library standards.

"One of the Librarians, Jane Somerville, is so dedicated to the cause of getting literature into the hands of the families in Stanley that she often spends her own money for new releases. I know this because she buys some of them from me and I only charge her cost."

Forty for Ten
Boise's Rediscovered Books recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary. Check out the coverage in Shelf Awareness and the awesome 10 Years of Memories in 40 Books promotion owners Laura and Bruce Delaney put together, featured on NWBL.

Third Place Adds First-Rate Staffer
Third Place Books has announced that Sam Kaas has joined their team as their Offsite Events Manager for all three locations.

Kaas was previously Events Coordinator at Bellingham's Village Books.

ABA SF Workshop Opp
The American Booksellers Association will offer an October 26 workshop in San Francisco titled Principles of Bookstore Finance. Third Place Books Managing Partner Robert Sindelar will lead the session.

ABA Senior Strategy Officer Dan Cullen reports some NW booksellers are already signed up and hopes others will consider making the trip.

"In-depth education on finances has been one of the most frequently requested subjects from members, and we think this will be a very strong session."

HC Offers from Distributors
Both Ingram and Baker & Taylor will offer special terms on books featured in your 2016 holiday catalog.

Ingram is giving an additonal 3%, while B & T will offer 45%, starting at the tradeshow and going through Dec. 16.

Ballinger Bowing Out
Princeton University Press rep Steve Ballinger is retiring after the fall season, as colleague Patricia Nelson puts it, "his heroic trade show swing across the West."

Ballinger started with PUP in 1986, covering the south and mid-Atlantic regions. He became National Accounts Manager in 1996 and then moved to Portland in 2004, calling on accounts throughout the Northwest.

Nelson encapsulates it nicely: "Steve is an intrepid book traveler known far and wide for his bow ties, his accordion, his impeccable courtesy and deep knowledge."

Stop by to share some memories with Steve and wish him luck for the future. He'll be at the University Press Sales Associates group exhibit on the show floor.

IndieCommerce One-on-Ones at the Show
ABA's IndieCommerce Manager Geetha Nathan will be available to discuss the program on both Friday (9 - 5) and Saturday (9:30 - 4:30). Sessions will be held in the Economic Development Boardroom, on the balcony level of the Exhibit Hall Rotunda. Happy Hour, Indeed!
Unofficial Kickoff Sets the Tone

With a couple dozen booksellers attending a Paz & Associates seminar, PNBA board members and staff on hand and many Education Day presenters and attendees rolling in to get a good night's sleep before the early starting bell the next morning, it seemed silly not to get together on the Thursday evening before the show.

An eager sponsor was found, Sterling Publishing, in support of the holiday catalog pick Complete IPA, and a party was born.

The Home Brewed Happy Hour featured 10 regional, small press authors, cold beer and a giant cheese plate! Needless to say, it put early attendees in a great mood.

Let us know if you'd like to contact any of the participating authors for a potential visit to your store. We'll help put you in touch.

BuzzBooks Winner
It was Gaiman's Game

Norton's Dan Christiaens (not pictured right) had to hustle to keep up with ARC requests and game cards, but it paid off with a BuzzBooks win for Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology (Feb. 7, 2017).

The announcement was first made at Saturday evening's Feast of Authors where randomly drawn cash prizes were awarded to three floor goers who visited every participating booth and placed personal votes in the tumbler.

Winners of $150 participant prizes:
Becky Milner, Vintage Books, Vancouver, WA
Michelle Williams, Jerrol's, Ellensburg, WA
Sally McPherson, Broadway Books, Portland, OR

Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales-fashioning the primeval stories into a novelistic arc.

Stick Around, Kid

Sunday's Exhibitor Exclamation! promotion was laden with booth and scholarship prizes for several lucky attendees who made the rounds on the show floor Sunday morning and remained eligible to win by staying through the "Hold On, I'm Coming" author presentation and luncheon.

Three Dozen Cases Find Home in Idaho

When the show closed on Sunday afternoon, 37 boxes of exhibitor-donated books, valued at $13,000, were loaded up and sent off to The Stanley Community Library, in Stanley, ID.

The truck was driven to Stanley by Sarah Hedrick, owner of Iconoclast Books, of nearby Ketchum. Hedrick nominated the store for this year's program, touting community efforts to find the library a bigger home and her own gratitude for library employees who shop at her store for new books.

Thank you to RLP Coordinator Colin Rea and his crew of PNBA volunteers, our generous exhibitor partners, and big rigger, Hedrick.

Surge and Stop Press Run Wraps
Holiday Catalogs On Way to Papers and Stores

Storm-generated power surges put a hiccup into the press run for the 2016 Holiday Books catalog, but our trusty press coordinator stayed on the job and rode out an extra two days in Portland to sign off on the last batches through the printer, Monday afternoon.

Early runs, completed prior to the first shut down, were packed and sent out the warehouse doors to the furthest destinations (the barge is headed your way, Alaska) and earliest insertion dates.

Stores should expect to receive in-store copies the last week of Oct., along with envelopes of display posters around the same time. Themed "flags" for marking catalog titles and a web banner will also be available for download.

The digital version will be available to view and to embed on store sites by the first week of November.

Binc Badges Make Big Difference
The Book Industry Charitable Foundation's Kit Steinway and Kathy Bartson spent the entire weekend with PNBA members at the show, including an appearance to address attendees at the General Membership Meeting.

During that meeting, Steinway reported that Binc has provided nearly $16,000 of assistance to PNBA members in the previous 18 months! Your show donations are definitely making a difference to your peers.

"Thanks again for the Binc Badge program, it was great to see so many booksellers wearing them! This is one of our largest fundraisers and the money raised goes a long way in helping booksellers when the need it most.  --Kit Mundus Steinway

Stumping for Joe
We're used to seeing Joe Tremblay at the show, but not walking the floor freely! Earlier this year McGraw-Hill Education transitioned to a digital-only publishing model and, as a result, all field management and representative positions were eliminated.

Although Tremblay enjoyed freelancing the show with his grandkids, he is definitely ready to get back to calling on accounts and is shopping for a new opportunity to do what he does best, "bring good books to happy readers." Keep him in mind and give him a holler if you hear of any leads.

Sell Your Store
Not literally. We want to keep you around. But you should provide a pitch to promote your store to potential customers who visit our member store listings on NWBookLovers.

If you haven't done so, please send Larry a 50-75 word descriptive blurb and maybe a fresh storefront photo and he'll update your listing.

Donley Hops the Desk
Trading the Office for the Road

After many years and roles with Powell's, most recently New Book Purchasing Supervisor, Shawn Donley--also your PNBA president--is switching things up.

Hachette is breaking up the territory and spreading out the reps, and Donley is the new guy for the Pacific Northwest.

"I'm really excited to be Hachette's new rep here in the Pacific Northwest. Though sad to leave Powell's after nearly 16 years, I'm thrilled that I'll now get to spend more time with all my favorite booksellers in this region."

Starting in December, Hachette's Bay area-based Tom McIntyre will concentrate his efforts on his original Northern California territory.

Donley will retain his role as PNBA president in 2017, the second year of his two-year term.

Share Blurbs from Other PNBA Stores

Each week we feature several PNBA bookseller Face Outs (almost 1,000 to date!) on NWBookLovers. These trustworthy endorsements are a tremendous resource to introduce to you handsell prospects that you may have missed within the walls of your own store.

Now, you can turn those NWBL Face Outs into shelftalkers that can do the selling for you even when you don't have a customer's ear. Download the template on the Bookseller Programs page and simply cut and past the author, title, blurb and blurber credit--there's an easily fillable field for each!

Download instructions vary from browser to browser. We've made it work on Safari, Firefox and Chrome, but if you have trouble, shoot us an email request and we'll attach the fillable pdf in the reply.

Lucia Calls it a Career After 40+
Ted Lucia started his book career as a buyer at Robinson's Department Store in Los Angeles, 1975. When he moved to the NW to become a rep with William Maher Associates, most of his big accounts were like his former employer, very unlike the indies that have dominated his route in recent years.

"What has remained constant is dealing with dedicated and smart booksellers who uniformly work hard to make their businesses successful. My mantra has been, 'I sell something of which I'm proud, to nice people.'"

Gift Buying AFTER the Holidays
Once again, the Seattle Gift Show is offering PNBA members complimentary attendance at its Jan. 6-9, 2017 event. Fresh products and business-building ideas await, so take advantage of ExpressPass attendee registration and make your plans now.

As an added bonus, show planners are also extending a $10 parking rebate to PNBA members. Simply present your parking stub to the parking rebate desk and let them know you're a member of PNBA.

Familiar Bookseller, New Store
When Kirkland's Parkplace Books shut its doors one year ago, premier bookseller Mary Harris told us she'd come calling with a new store, and she made good on her claim in less than a year. Harris attended the show with new partner, local poet Chris Jarmick, representing BookTree, and the store's door is now open. Read the announcement from Shelf Awareness.

Whatcom County's Finest
We're not talking Trump here, because none of us who know them are really shocked, but Chuck and Dee Robinson, of Village Books, were recently honored twofold by the local community. Shelf Awareness has the full rundown on the double honors.

Blue Cover? You Tell Us
We received this shot in the dark request from a teacher looking for a lost classic. Rattle your book brain and see what you come up with.

I'm looking for a novel about a troubled teenage boy who is the child of divorce. The mother is a lawyer in Washington state, and the father owns a marina in California, I think. The novel was written around 1970. Although I cannot remember the author (Adams?) or title, I would love to find the book.

So who's up to the challenge?

"Back in the 1980s, when we owned the St. Helens Book Shop, we attended several shows, in Tacoma and Eugene and once in Las Vegas. At one of those shows we were introduced to 3 Seattle area authors, including K.K. Beck and Earl W. Emerson. The third, we believe, was also an attorney who wrote about police officers.
Do you have anyone there old enough or clever enough to help me remember his name? I would like to read him again, as I am with Emerson."

--Allen and Sylvia Six

(If that part of your brain still works, please email Brian. Praise and beer await.)

Simonson Says; We Still Listen
The Seattle Review of Books published a super cool 40-year historical profile of Elliott Bay bookseller, agitator, and advocate, Rick Simonson.

Feel the Booklove
"When somebody offers me free money, I take it."
--Sally McPherson, of Broadway Books, in response to Ingram's indie rebate program. As reported by Bookselling This Week.

Anyone else think this Third Place shot looks like a row of slot machines
when viewed out of the corner of the eye?

Shelftalker Template
