Stop Surviving, Start Thriving / Social Media

"You just need to get on social media!" We've all heard some variation of this advice a million times. But what do you do once you're on social media? How do you build a presence that actually converts into real sales and reaches your ideal customers? In this panel we will help break down how you and your store can make the leap from simply surviving in the world of social media, to truly thriving. We'll give you the tools you need to make social media work for you.

Bookish Events: Outside the Box Thinking

Hosting readings for a standing-room-only crowd is a dream come true, but it’s not the only way to bring the crowds into a bookstore or library. This session will explore how outside-the-box thinking with community-partnered events, writing contests, critique groups, and even cooking lessons can up foot traffic and boost book sales. Attendees will leave with event ideas, potential partnering professionals in their areas, publicity templates to spread the word, and tips for converting Interested statuses to Attending. This session is relevant to any bookstore, library, or author.

The Recipe for Great Read-Alouds
What is the recipe for a great read-aloud?
Maximize children’s book buying and selling by learning more about the recipe for a great read-aloud. A sales rep/former bookseller, a children’s book buyer/ children’s book editor, and members of the audience weigh in on this panel about what to look for in a book ("the ingredients"), how to read excerpts aloud engagingly ("the cooking techniques"), and how to showcase these delights for customers ("the plating") to cook up connection, appreciation, literacy, and sales using picture books.

Education Keynote Lunch

This is a Fire Drill: Preparing for and Avoiding Crises
Presented by the American Booksellers Association
Join ABA Director of Education (and former PNBA bookseller!) Kim Hooyboer in a review of some of the top crises stores have experienced in the last year. From cybersecurity threats to a car driving into the store, we will provide resources and tips to prepare for and, when possible, avoid these crises at your store. Topics will include: fire, flood, and natural disasters; protesters, break-ins, and ransomware, credit card fraud, and more. Throughout the session, we’ll explore ways to respond to these crises, prioritize employee communication, and mitigate the risk of these events occurring at your store. Think of this session as insurance and take this time to invest in protecting your business.

Kim Hooyboer is the Director of Education at the American Booksellers Association. After nearly two decades working in bookstores around the country (including Third Place Books and Elliott Bay Book Company in Seattle, Powell's Books in Portland, and WORD Bookstore in Jersey City), Hooyboer now works with the ABA to develop educational programming and resources to help bookstores thrive in an ever-evolving industry.
