Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association

2010 Book Awards

judyness
The Pacific Northwest Booksellers Association (PNBA) is a non-profit association of independent bookstores in five Northwest states; Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. The Association produces educational and promotional events and materials for its members, and offers literacy, free speech and author promotional vehicles through its member stores. One of our oldest and most popular programs is our annual Pacific Northwest Book Awards, which have been presented to such luminary figures in Northwest literature as Ivan Doig, Ursula LeGuin, David James Duncan, David Guterson, Jon Krakauer, Chuck Palahniuk, and Sherman Alexie. In most cases, these writers were recognized before gaining national attention. More information about past winners of PNBA Awards can be found HERE, on PNBA's website.

PNBA's Awards Committee is made up of nine volunteer booksellers from member stores throughout the region. The Committee members considered more than 200 titles nominated for a 2010 award, for work published by a Northwest author in 2009.

The Big Burn
Timothy Egan

In The Worst Hard Time, Timothy Egan put the environmental disaster of the Dust Bowl at the center of a rich history, told through characters he brought to indelible life. Now he performs the same alchemy with the Big Burn, the largest-ever forest fire in America and the tragedy that cemented Teddy Roosevelt's legacy in the land.

TIMOTHY EGAN is a national enterprise reporter for the New York Times. He is the author of five books and the recipient of several awards, including the Pulitzer Prize. Read the USA Today review on their blog. He lives in Seattle, Washington.

On March 16, Tim Egan spoke at the Tucson (Arizona) Festival of Books about The Big Burn.

Boneshaker
Cherie Priest

In the early days of the Civil War, rumors of gold in the frozen Klondike brought hordes of newcomers to the Pacific Northwest. Anxious to compete, Russian prospectors commissioned inventor Leviticus Blue to create a great machine that could mine through Alaska's ice. Thus was Dr. Blue's Incredible Bone-Shaking Drill Engine born. But on its first test run the Boneshaker went terribly awry, destroying several blocks of downtown Seattle and unearthing a subterranean vein of blight gas that turned anyone who breathed it into the living dead.

CHERIE PRIEST made her debut with the Eden Moore series of Southern Gothic ghost stories that began with Four and Twenty Blackbirds. She lives in Seattle, Washington, and keeps a popular blog at theclockworkcentury.com.

Check out this great article about Cherie in the Seattle Times.

Cherie Priest spoke on Oregon Public Broadcasting's "Northwest Passages" on Thursday, March 25, 2010 to discuss "Boneshaker." Highly recommended!

The Crying Tree
Naseem Rakha

Irene and Nate Stanley are living a quiet and contented life with their two children, Bliss and Shep, on their family farm in southern Illinois when Nate suddenly announces he's been offered a job as a deputy sheriff in Oregon. Irene fights her husband. She does not want to uproot her family and has deep misgivings about the move. Nevertheless, the family leaves, and they are just settling into their life in Oregon's high desert when the unthinkable happens. Fifteen-year-old Shep is shot and killed during an apparent robbery in their home. The accused murderer, a young mechanic with a history of assault, robbery, and drug-related offenses, is caught, tried and sentenced to death.

HERE is a beautiful new trailer for "The Crying Tree." Booksellers might want to use it on your home page or in your store, if you show such things.

HERE is film version of a prose poem written and read by Naseem, about her years working as a war correspondent, showing her powerful use of words and imagery.

OPB's Think Out Loud interview with Rylant & McClure.

In a great interview for JacketFlap, Ms. McClure explains the process she went through in developing the art work for "All in a Day," and shows some of the drawings she then turned into paper cuttings. Fascinating.
